about

'In April we read about William Gray's journey from the musical mecca of Leeds to the musical desolation of Hangzhou, and with Spring finally settled in, it's time to look at his latest creation, Wensan Rd. Wensan Rd is a 9 song album, available to buy online from William's official Bandcamp page.

One thing is clear, William obviously takes his craft very seriously and his acoustic guitar playing - complete with a shed load of delicious folky licks - is tighter than a duck's pocket. The album is like a folk journey from East to West, and the audible story is nicely layered without losing that bit of raw Brit grit; its melancholic sound could only be manufactured in a place as musically diverse as Leeds.

My favourite track on the album is definitely 'Our Time'. From the first listen, the song had me enchanted and its melodies and harmonies keep the song interesting throughout, even after I repeated the song 5 times. The album is spread out nicely, and the track listing is perfect. Wensan Rd, like many of our experiences in Hangzhou perhaps, has a whole spectrum of dynamics: light, dark, fast, slow - and all things in between.

Personally I think this album sets the bar to an incredibly high standard, and its finely crafted songs and sounds could raise the game of those brave enough to occupy the same sonic space. Rather them than me. Could this high quality album, made in Hangzhou, be the shape of things to come? Only time will tell.'
